AI and your job search

Efficiency Without Losing Your Voice

AI can be a valuable partner when you’re exploring your next career move. It can help you work faster, get unstuck, and prepare more thoughtfully. But like any tool, how you use it matters.

Here’s how to use AI responsibly - while making sure your experience, perspective, and voice stay front and center.

What AI is great for

Use AI to support the process of your job search:

  • Drafting or organizing resumes and cover letters
  • Clarifying how your experience aligns to a roles
  • Identifying skills or keywords to highlight
  • Preparing for interviews through practice and reflection

AI works best as an editor, sounding board, or coach - not the author of your story.

Remember: AI tools can contain bias or gaps. Treat them as helpers, not gatekeepers of your story.

Where to draw the line

AI can support you, but it shouldn’t speak for you:

  • Don’t submit content you don’t fully understand or couldn’t explain
  • Don’t allow AI to exaggerate or reshape your experience
  • Don’t use AI to answer questions for you during screenings or interviews. If you use assistive technology or need an accommodation, let the recruiter know so the process remains accessible

Those conversations are designed to get to know you—your motivations, how you think, and what you want from the next chapter.

Accuracy is non-negotiable

AI can introduce errors, assumptions, or language that doesn’t quite fit. Before applying:

  • Proofread everything carefully
  • Validate dates, titles, and scope of experience
  • Make sure the tone sounds like how you naturally communicate
  • Avoid pasting confidential, proprietary, or personal information into public AI tools; redact client names or sensitive details first

If it’s not accurate or doesn’t feel like you, it needs revision.

A skill you’ll use at work, too

Across today’s workplace, AI is used to drive efficiency and focus. Tools like Copilot help streamline work, but employees are still expected to bring their own ideas, insights, and lived experience every day.

Using AI responsibly in your job search reflects how you’ll be expected to show up at work—thoughtful, accountable, and authentic.

In some locations, employers must disclose or get consent before using automated tools in hiring. Review those notices so you understand how your data is used and what your options are.

Practical prompts to use responsibly

Use prompts like these to support your applications—then refine the output in your own voice:

  • Resume clarity: “Help me rewrite this resume bullet to be clearer and more concise, without changing the meaning or adding experience.”
  • Role alignment: “Based on this job description, which parts of my existing experience should I emphasize?”
  • Interview preparation: “Help me practice explaining this experience in a clear, conversational way for an interview.”

AI gives you a starting point. You own the final version and you should be able to stand behind every detail.
