Director of Operations
Reporting to the Sr. Director of Global Manufacturing, the incumbent provides leadership to all BD Biosciences (BDB) instrument (i.e. complex electro-mechanical instrumentation) manufacturing operations in San Jose, California to ensure attainment of key strategic initiatives in support of both short and long-term business goals. Leads and directs an integrated team that provides superior products and services to BD customers around the world. Provides leadership in a customer-centric environment to drive continuous process and cost improvement, innovation, quality/regulatory compliance, and development of team members through engagement, coaching and empowerment. Incumbent represents the Integrated Supply Chain (e.g. Operations) function on business platform leadership teams by taking a global view of Operations-related support and requirements to meet the business needs. Develops and implements strategic manufacturing plans in support of the business unit/segment plan. Works on abstract issues and problems across all areas of the business, including cross-business unit relationships, as necessary. The incumbent will be required to make decisions and recommendations in the face of uncertain and dynamic business conditions, where errors in judgment may seriously impact customer or supplier relationships, result in substantial loss of scheduled production, deterioration of product/service quality, or seriously affect the financial position of the business unit.

The Plant Manager reports to the Sr. Director of Global Manufacturing. The incumbent provides leadership to all BD Biosciences (BDB) instrument (i.e. complex electro-mechanical instrumentation) manufacturing operations in San Jose, California to ensure attainment of key strategic initiatives in support of both short and long-term business goals. Responsibilities:

  • Ensure attainment of key performance metrics across safety, quality, delivery, and financial performance areas.
  • Direct and integrate broad business process areas including manufacturing operations, custom product manufacturing, and new product development support. Responsible for ensuring operational excellence in the following functional areas: Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S), Quality Control, Inventory Control and Materials Management, Manufacturing, and Facilities Management.
  • Establishes and drives processes, to ensure the safety of our associates, protection of the physical assets and compliance with environmental, health and safety policies and regulations.
  • Directs the development of budgets and product/service cost goals for all activities within the San Jose operation. Monitors and controls budgets through the planned period to ensure that goals are met, and variances are controlled. Delivers budgeted Operations financial performance.
  • In collaboration with the local Quality leader, incumbent directs quality management activities to ensure that plans, systems, and procedures are in place to maximize the quality of products and services and continuously increase levels of customer satisfaction, while minimizing losses and waste.
  • In collaboration with the local Supply Chain leader, incumbent is responsible for ensuring that adequate capacity and assets are readily available to supply product demand. This will entail effective and ongoing communication between Planning and the Manufacturing sites, active and effective capital planning and management, and effective project planning and execution in situations where supply chain network changes are required.
  • Demonstrates strong executive presence and leadership at the site level and supports the development of strong leadership behaviors within their organization. The role requires a high level of orchestration among different functional groups at the San Jose site. Must be able to provide guidance and collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure alignment with Company policies and procedures.
  • Incumbent will partner closely with business platform leaders by representing the Integrated Supply Chain (e.g. Operations) on business platform teams. Leads business integration activities to ensure alignment on product strategy roadmaps and management of customer expectations.
  • Leads manufacturing and business integration activities in which the incumbent must understand business requirements (financial, service level, new product, etc.) and implement strategies (capacity, productivity, technology enhancements, new product/process launch, continuous improvement, etc.) to deliver the desired outcome.
  • Strategy development is a key responsibility and the incumbent will need to clearly understand the business direction, evaluate that in terms of existing manufacturing structure and capabilities, develop the appropriate manufacturing strategies to respond to the business needs, and provide leadership and guidance to the plant to effectively execute the agreed upon strategies. 
  • Improves Operational effectiveness through Continuous Improvement and implementation of BD initiatives, including but not limited to Lean, Six Sigma, Validation, and SAP ERP business processes while ensuring alignment to business and functional goals.    
  • Responds to changing business conditions with an emphasis on customer satisfaction through continuous process improvement. Identifies and communicates key indicators of performance, results achieved and plans for improvement. Keeps the business platform teams informed of results and significant developments affecting the business.
  • Collaborates with all business functions on effective product development and technology transfer, introduction into manufacturing, and product launch and support of new products and processes within the Global Product Development System (GPDS) framework. Ensures manufacturing capabilities are aligned to ensure effective and successful product launches and product lifecycle management.
  • Partnering with Human Resources, the incumbent carries out responsibilities such as hiring, job assignments, termination recommendations, transfers, promotions, salary actions, performance assessments and development planning.
  • Demonstrates understanding of key US and foreign regulations affecting the business and assures compliance with those regulations. Assures that site-level processes and systems fulfill those regulatory requirements. May participate in an evaluation of regulatory strategy and regulatory risk. May recommend changes to practices and procedures to support compliance requirement. Communicates the need for regulatory compliance to members in their functional area.
  • Performs other related duties and assignments as required.
  • May require both domestic and international travel up to 20% of the time.

Qualifications:

  • Requires a BS in business, science, or engineering discipline with 15+ years of progressive manufacturing/operations management experience in life sciences, biotechnology, or capital equipment related industries, or equivalent combination of education and experience. MBA or further education in graduate studies is desirable.
  • Broad business acumen in Manufacturing, Finance, Materials Management, Procurement, Facilities Management, Quality Systems, and Human Resources.
  • Experience leading manufacturing operations of complex electro-mechanical instrumentation for medical device and/or life sciences markets is strongly preferred.
  • Experience leading low volume/high mix make-to-order manufacturing operations. Experience designing operational capabilities for a broad product portfolio to drive high customer service levels while optimizing cash flow is highly preferred.
  • General scientific and technological understanding of cell biology and immunology applications in addition to a high level of understanding of research and clinical labs, workflow efficiency and automation is preferred.
  • Experience driving multi-functional operational change. Able to analyze, plan, manage, communicate, and execute change management.
  • Global experience with complex manufacturing and supply chain networks including managing contract manufacturing partners is highly preferred.
  • Possess strong strategic thinking abilities and has demonstrated the ability to develop a vision and drive for successful attainment of that vision. Experience building a manufacturing or operations strategy aligned to the business unit’s strategic imperatives.
  • Passion for developing talent utilizing creative and effective programs and practices with a successful track record of attracting, developing, and retaining a diverse team.
  • Strong inclination and passion for continuous improvement.
  • Strong knowledge and experience with product development and product launch process, including taking a product from design to commercialization.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work with, present to and influence senior management in a cross-functional, matrix reporting, and global environment.
  • Bold, innovative, and willing to take calculated risks.
  • Knowledge of GMP, ISO and FDA regulations specific to the life sciences industry.
  • Knowledge of MRP/ ERP Systems and JIT management techniques. Hands on SAP experience is desirable.  
  • Excellent written and oral skills, and strong facilitation and negotiation skills.
