The ME must be able to get things done through people that do not report to them and can work through adverse situations while building and maintaining good personal relationships. Responsibilities:
Develop and maintain the required procedures to support processes for optical assembly and test of systems. Work with assembly associates and test technicians to determine the root causes of Optics related issues and conduct further testing and investigations as required.
Investigate and resolve all the optical related issues in Manufacturing including vendor non-conforming materials. Support the manufacturing test technician team on laser alignment and Optics related issues encountered during the testing of systems.
Collaborate with suppliers/vendors to get failure analysis reports and explanation of root causes for non-conforming materials. Help reduce the number of non-conforming material defects caused by Optics components.
Improve manufacturing build processes or sequences specific to the integration of optical components, optical alignment, and system calibrations. Evaluate the manufacturing effectiveness of a build process and implement improvements to meet build cycle times and product design specifications. As required, maintain records and reporting systems for coordination of manufacturing operations.
Qualify new optical components to replace end of life components or find additional sources as needed. Collaborate with suppliers to improve incoming material quality and acceptance.
Support the transfer of new products from R&D to Manufacturing. Learn and understand the requirements and architecture of next generation subsystems.
Interface with R&D Systems and Optics Engineering teams to define optical system and able to create and update specifications of Optics components.
Able to read and interpret optical components’ specification drawings, electrical schematics, mechanical CAD drawings and update models using computer-aided design such as ZEMAX. Capable of using Optics software tools such NanoScan, BeamView or the like to analyze laser beam quality.
Have a good understanding of the applications of lasers particularly direct diode lasers, optical filters, optical detectors such as PMTs, SSDs, and APDs.
Collaborate with different cross functional teams with the major objectives to improve manufacturing operational efficiency, qualify replacement components, optimize assembly process and testing, improve product quality, customer satisfaction, and reduce manufacturing costs and waste.
Must be adept in troubleshooting and determining root cause of technical issues and timely implementing effective solutions.
Review engineering designs and documentation for completeness, clarity, and manufacturability. Evaluate and help qualify new suppliers that produce optical components.
May perform and document field failure investigations, identify root causes, and participate in corrective and preventative action efforts.
Keep abreast of the basic requirements for compliance in work area and comply with those requirements. Participate as required in training on regulatory issues affecting work area. Bring regulatory compliance questions and issues to the attention of management.
Promote a safe work environment and provide recommendations on maintaining the safety of the work environment. Participate in Environmental, Health and Safety programs. Implement corrective actions to address hazards. Notify supervisors of all observed hazardous conditions or unsafe work practices.
Required Qualifications
A BS degree (required): in Optics/Physics, or Optical/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering.
6+ years’ experience in the manufacturing of opto-electro-mechanical devices.
Minimum 3 years’ experience with diode Lasers, Optical fibers, Mirrors/Filters, Prisms, PMTs, APDs.
Understand optical design and specifications of optical components and capable of differentiating process issues and design issues.
Understand engineering mechanical, electrical and optical drawings.
Able to create optical fixtures to evaluate optical components on the bench.
Experience in writing and reviewing Engineering Change Orders.
Excellent written and verbal communication with good inter-personal skills and adept at resolving conflicts and managing time efficiently.
Proficient in Microsoft Office, Project, & Visio.
Working knowledge of Optical Standards such as MIL-PRF-13830 or ISO 10110
Familiarity with ISO 9001 and 13485 standards.
Willingness to travel when required.
Additional skills/Preferred Qualifications
MS degree
Proficient in SolidWorks and SAP ERP.
Broad experience supporting the following commodities or supplier types: Fluidic systems, machined parts, sheet metal, PCA’s, plastics, power systems, product packaging, turnkey subcontractors, hardware, labeling.
Strong cGMP familiarity 21 CFR part 820, medical industry experience.
Experience implementing LEAN manufacturing processes.
6 Sigma green or black belt.
