Program Objective/Scope

BD Technologies and Innovation proudly offers a Summer Internship Program for active undergraduate and graduate students. Through this program, the student will have the chance to gain real-world experience in research and development in the medical device industry. 

Selected students will be immersed in the design and development process to build top selling medical device products for various global markets. The summer internship program at BD is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience at one of the top medical device companies while advancing the world of health.

Each intern will have an individual project and the opportunity to develop technical engineering and scientific expertise. Through our summer internship, intern students develop an extensive professional network, learn how to work in a scientific and engineering environment, build hands-on laboratory skills, and deliver presentations showcasing their work. 

We are recruiting for highly driven engineering/science students with a passion for technology and product development. The candidate is responsible for all relocation, housing, and transportation costs.

Project Area: Sensing

Applicable Majors: Health, Business, or STEM fields

The Sensing function supports early-stage innovation with a focus on identifying unmet clinical needs and early technologies to address top needs. Our team’s mission is to deliver value-based innovation by prioritizing opportunities to support the business units (BU) in prioritizing the new product development pipeline. To uncover unmet needs, we interact directly with clinicians and stakeholders to understand patient journeys, pain points, and key criteria to address the need. We also conduct secondary research including literature review, technology landscape, etc.  Each project is driven by a cross-functional team including R&D, BU marketing, and medical affairs to ensure we remain focused on clinical needs aligned with BU interest. 

In this role, the intern will support early-stage innovation efforts to help build and prioritize the R&D pipeline for a large medical technology company. This work will include clinician and stakeholder interactions and secondary research (e.g. literature review) to identify and rank unmet needs that are aligned with the business strategy. Specifically, this could involve any of the following activities: drafting interview guides, participating in stakeholder interviews, participating in ethnographic research, generating need statements and criteria, filtering needs, technology landscape analysis, and hands-on human factors studies to support concept down-selection

Qualifications:

REQUIRED:

  • The candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States without limitations and require no sponsorship for visa status now or in the future (e.g. H1-B status)

  • BS and/or MS/PhD students pursuing a degree in health-related, business, STEM, or related field.

  • Experience conducting qualitative and quantitative user research

  • Proficiency in Microsoft suite of software (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)

  • Ability to work 40 hours per week for duration of the 10 to 12-week summer internship period

PREFERRED:

  • GPA minimum of 3.0

  • Previous Internship Experience

  • Pursuing or have completed BS Degree: Junior and Senior level Candidates

  • Experience with HF/UX methodologies

  • MS/PhD Degree:  All levels are encouraged to apply.
