The EHS Specialist reports directly to the Site EHS Manager and is responsible for supporting the day-to-day safety, industrial hygiene, occupational health, security, and environmental management control programs and evaluations for BD in Sumter South Carolina which has over 850 associates and 650,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing and warehouse space.Job Description

The EHS Specialist will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining environmental, health, and safety programs to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and promote a culture of safety within the organization.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists the EHS Manager with facilitating the BD Production System EHS Component Teams to proactively improve safety for our associates, evaluate risks and incidents, and identify areas where costs and loss experience can be improved through new initiatives, root cause and preventative actions, and accurate and timely communication.
Drive culture changes through engagement with associates on behavior.
Provides support and assistance to the Site EHS Steering Committee, EHS Component Teams, PVP Teams, and EHS Report Outs.
Enter monthly metrics and data into the EHS One Safety System and other dashboards.
Assure compliance in all applicable BD Corporate, DOT, OSHA, and EPA regulations.
Reviews and maintains site strategy, systems, policies, and procedures related to EHS. Conducts periodic safety audits / assessments to evaluate compliance to regulations and facility safety & environmental policies & procedures. Documents assessment findings, assists areas with resolving discrepancies.
Coordinates TBRA, HAZOP, FMEA and ergonomic evaluations and assists in implementation of process improvements. Participates with teams to design new and existing processes with hazard minimization and waste reduction as primary objectives.
Facilitates effective and engaging safety and environmental training. EHS Team Delivers training content as necessary which includes new hire safety orientation.
Performs risk assessments and process evaluations to resolve the need for engineering controls and/or administrative controls. Coordinates implementation of process controls as related to safety/environmental issues.
Coordinate the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Team. Assists in regulatory compliance assurance associated with waste management, wastewater discharge, air quality, UST management and spill control.
Reviews and updates as necessary, procedures that provide BMP safety and environmental standards that exceed accepted industry standards (ISO 9001, IS14001, OSHA, EPA, FDA GMP’s).
Performs inspections and audits to assure compliance to procedures and regulatory requirements. Knowledge of regulatory reporting by Federal, State and local agencies.
Supports the environmental management system for compliance with ISO 14001 certification in the following topics: regulatory compliance in waste management, wastewater discharge, air quality, storage tank management and spill control.
Supports the BD Site following all local, state, federal safety regulations, policies, and procedures including RCRA Hazardous waste regulations. Aligns with all local BD quality and safety policies, procedures, and practices through consistent application of sound quality assurance and safety principles.

Requirements
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED required
Preferred. an Associates or Bachelors Degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field
Minimum of 2-3 years relevant Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) experience is required.
1+ years experience working in a highly automated & large (+500 person) manufacturing environment is preferred.
Certification in EHS (e.g., CSP, CIH) is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
In-depth knowledge of EHS regulations and standards.
Knowledge of Safety, OSHA elements, and environmental elements
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Work Environment:
BD is a smoke-free campus. Smoking and the use of electronic smoking devices, marijuana, or tobacco products are not allowed on BD property, grounds or in the parking areas. We appreciate your cooperation in adhering to this policy
False eyelashes, press-on fingernails, and Jewelry is not allowed on the production floor including dermal. Any associate wearing dermal will be required to cover them while working on the production floor.
Shoes are required to be Steel Toe and non-slip for all associates while on the production floor for safety purposes.
