As a Manufacturing Supervisor, you facilitate the safe execution of daily activities related to the manufacture of components and/or finished product in the VMS department. Provide servant leadership and motivation to technical and hourly associates to achieve desired quality, quantity, service, and cost standards through safe and proper utilization of materials and equipment. And you report directly to the department Manufacturing Unit Leader.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide Leadership in a facilitator role to assigned technical and hourly associates to achieve departmental quality, quantity, service, cost, and safety goals.

  • Facilitate team meetings as required and participate in associate projects as a team member.

  • Assures compliance to appropriate regulatory requirements. Initiates corrective activities when not in compliance and advises Cell Leader of noncompliance and proposed corrective activities. 

  • Instructs and facilitates training of associates in the performance of their job in a safe and efficient manner, following prescribed procedures as detailed in the job description, VO’s, VS’s, VT’s, ECO’s, JSA’s and hazardous materials communication requirements.

  • Recommends and/or initiates personnel activities such as selection, transfer, discharge, disciplinary actions, and associates complaints in a fair, consistent, and timely fashion to align with company Human Resources policies and BD Core Values.

  • Recommends, initiates, or facilitates measures from associates to improve production methods, equipment performance, product quality, changes in working condition and use of equipment to increase efficiency, improve quality and reduce waste.

  • Coordinates weekly production schedules with Materials Control to assure timely issuance of work orders and materials vital to enhance operating efficiencies and service levels. 

  • Analyzes work order variances and works with the materials coordinator and Cell Leader on corrective activities to resolve material variances.

  • Ensures that hourly teams strictly follow preventative maintenance standard work procedures to assure equipment is properly maintained to minimize downtime and meet FDA, EPA, and OSHA requirements. Ensures that PMs are carefully planned relative to advance preparation of needed materials and resources and drives urgency and accuracy for timely restarts.

  • Does whatever it takes to ensure their teams get the resources, repairs, standard work procedures, and support to win, (Servant Leadership)

  • Ensures that all direct reports provide DHR accuracy and maintains appropriate manufacturing documentation.

  • Initiates and maintains accurate records and reports of daily production, waste, associate status changes, levels of absence, disciplinary warnings, and any other records necessary for the satisfactory performance of the operation.

  • Owner of the TMS (Tiered Management System) Tier 1 and Tier 2 on their shift, drives daily problem solving, urgency, and raises issues they cannot resolve with their own team. Prepares the T2 board in advance of the daily T2 meeting and is clearly knowledgeable about the WIN opportunities on their lines. Drives ownership and gains commitments on resolution from resources to ensure that problems are resolved.

  • Responsible for actively partnering and building teamwork with Process Engineers to improve line efficiency and reduce waste. Ensures that Process Engineers create and modify the standard work procedures as necessary for success. And communicates repetitive issues needing redesigns to the Process Engineers so that improvements can be made.

  • Responsible to ensure that all operations associates follow the prescribed standard work and set up procedures without fail. Supervisor learns and understands all operations standard works such that they can assist with problem solving and coach those associates with opportunities.

  • Sustains and improves BD Excellence standards for Safety, 5S, TMS, People (training) and TPM (Total Productive Maintenance)

  • Participates in Lean Kaizen Events to continuously improve business performance.

  • Addresses poor performance in a timely manner and holds associates accountable for follow all safety, quality, and operational rules including adherence to attendance and break polices.

  • Leads by example and adamantly supports the goals and strategies of plant leadership with all plant personnel.

  • Creates an environment where trust and respect is earned by being a good listener, getting in the arena with their teams as needed to resolve problems, spending most of their time on the production floor, and doing whatever it takes to help their teams win. (Servant Leadership).

  • Actively presents ideas to their Cell Leader to drive OEE and waste reduction. Takes an initiative-taking role in continuous improvement and drives actions that produce results.

  • Continuously learns the function of the equipment within the department and develops expertise with the associated standard work that their associates must follow.

  • Creates an environment where their reports trust and respect the consistent and fair enforcement of expectations while fostering and open-door policy where associates are comfortable raising concerns and needs.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Provides servant leadership, direction, and supervision for non-exempt associates, including writing performance reviews.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Performs other duties as required by Manufacturing Unit Leader or Associate Director of Manufacturing for the business unit.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degreewith2 years of supervisory experience.

  • High School Diploma/G.E.Dwith10 years of experiencein lieu of a bachelor's degree.

  • Previous high-speed manufacturing experience in a technical or lead role is highly desirable.

  • Experience in medical device manufacturing, Lean Manufacturing, and SAP is preferred.

  • Ability to work day and night shifts (training on day shift, role will be night shift).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledgeof basic problem-solving tools such as Root Cause Analysis, 5 Whys, 4M analysis, and PDCA.

  • Computer proficiencyin Microsoft Office, including Excel, is required.

  • Abilityto apply TMS processes for the lines/areas and set the 24-hour direction for the manufacturing unit is preferred.

  • Knowledgeof Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and the ability to apply processes to improve line performance is preferred.

  • Leadership abilities: Demonstrated leadership skills, excellent organizational and critical thinking skills, high sense of urgency, strong motivation, balanced perspective, and effective communication at all levels.

  • Potential for advancement: Manufacturing supervisors should display potential and desire to move to higher management levels within 3-5 years.

Work Environment:

  • BD is a smoke-free campus.  Smoking and the use of electronic smoking devices, marijuana, or tobacco products are not allowed on BD property, grounds or in the parking areas.  We appreciate your cooperation in adhering to this policy

  • False eyelashes, press-on fingernails, and Jewelry is not allowed on the production floor including dermals.  Any associate wearing dermals will be required to cover them while working on the production floor. 

  • Shoes are required to be Steel Toe and non-slip for all associates while on the production floor for safety purposes.
