It will provide support to local site management, through the global facilities operations group, in meeting their corporate obligation of maintaining a safe, healthful, environmentally sustainable, and compliant work environment through the development of consistent programs that leverage established business tools. The individual will be the conduit between the Central EHS team, and the supported sites EHS representative(s) as well as partners in Sales. The position will focus on the development and maintenance of a consistent EHS infrastructure.

The Global Facilities EHS Lead will be providing leadership on EHS programs while working directly with all Corporate NBU, mixed use sites, Sales organization and indirectly engages and leads all maintenance and facilities personnel on EHS initiatives. This role supports all Regions.

Role and Responsibilities:

This position is global in nature. Strategic Orientation:

The Global Facilities EHS Lead interfaces and coordinates EHS policy with Associates throughout our sites globally. This individual will maintain strict oversight of all external contractors.  They will guide the policy updates and site EHS procedures and interface directly with regulatory agencies, inspectors and internal stakeholders.  This individual will be able to empower and lead continuous improvement initiatives and be able to help lead change associated with the outcomes of these events.   Collaborating with facility design teams on generating scope of work, value engineering, project timelines and be able to contribute through their project management delivery methods. The support of this role can extend to individuals who are working remotely but assigned to a location not actively sustained by a business unit.  Clients can include offices, laboratories, warehouses, training venues, and remote operations.

Sphere of Influence:

The Global Facilities EHS Lead reports to the Global Facilities Director located at the Franklin Lakes, NJ BD site.  The position requires heavy interface and interaction with Senior Leaders and colleagues from Central EHS, Human Resources and Central Sustainability and other internal collaborators.  This interface includes understanding the needs, communicating with site facilities requirements and strategic objectives as well as risks and risk mitigation measures from an EH&S standpoint.  This individual would also have a direct influence on the site Facilities operations through maintenance standard methodologies.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Represent Global Facilities Operations and Local site management when corporate policies are being developed.

  • Providing the overall leadership to ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA and related regulations, including BD policies and procedures.

  • Plans, develops, administers, and manages organization safety policies, programs and training.

  • Oversees the maintenance of EH&S records (accidents, waste manifests, etc.) and prepares appropriate reports. Audits facility and operations and investigates accidents. Recommends and/or initiates changes to mitigate hazard and repeat accidents.

  • Conduct or oversee training for personnel on safety, health and environmental issues. Provides advice on safety and protection and carries out audits to ensure that organization and government standards on environment, health and safety are met.

  • Assists facilities leadership with developing/improving strategies for maintenance of buildings, grounds, and operations. As required prepares analyses and cost estimates for renovations, expansions, etc. Monitors utility systems to ensure full and efficient operations. Initiates cost saving measures in all areas of responsibility around energy use and operations.

  • Conducts Continuous Improvement Kaizen Blitz’ aimed at establishing as-is process and developing a more efficient To-Be process. 

  • Provides leadership on a site wide Emergency Response Team and maintains good relationships with local first responders.

  • Provide EHS support to the BD Sales organization in partnership with Central EHS

  • Be a Subject Matter resource for all EHS aspects.  Maintain access to technical expertise (internal or external) that can meet the diverse stakeholder needs

  • Guide business partners to meet regulatory and BD corporate requirements.

  • Be the conduit between non ISC sites, non-R&D, Sales and the Central EHS Team.  Communicate and advocate up and down.

  • Mentor EHS professionals

  • Support non EHS professionals providing resources at the sites.

  • Support business continuity

  • Ensure each site has adequate infrastructure to provide a compliant, safe and healthy workplace.

  • Review and approve all CAPEX Appropriation Requests as the BD EHS expert on all facilities CB2s including EHS review of project and EHS expectations of contractors supporting capital project.

Desired Skills:

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Experience with understanding and implementing programs to ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, Radiation regulations.

  • Understanding of Management system principles and the ability to lead administer a management system.

  • Must be a solution-oriented team play who can lead a team, influence decision and work collaboratively across multiple businesses, regions, and functions with associates at all levels of the organization. 

  • Strong regulatory background in local, state and federal standards in Health, Safety and Environmental. 

Education and/ or Experience Required:

The position requires a broad knowledge of multiple EHS Aspects.  Specific aspects include:

Experience:

  • 7 - 10 years of experience in the field of Facilities EHS operations and around site hazardous waste handing regulations and environmental policy around air and water permitting.

  • 10+ years of experience developing and maintaining EHS Systems across a diverse range of environments (office, manufacturing, Warehouse) 

  • Experience working in an FDA regulated environment. 

Education/Credentials:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a science or technology field (environmental health, safety; engineering, chemistry, biology)

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Professional preferred
