Overview

The BD Excellence & Business Transformation team is seeking an Associate Director, Business Process Excellence for the Medication Management Solutions (MMS) business unit in San Diego, CA. Kaizen Events are a pillar of the BD Excellence business system. The Associate Director will partner with business leadership, Operations Strategy, and the BD Excellence deployment team to identify and deliver on high-impact transactional process improvement initiatives aligned with the strategic priorities of the global MMS business unit. This role will lead and enable a team of lean black belts to deliver best-in-class structured problem-solving and Kaizen Event facilitation along with training programs to drive process improvement and a continuous improvement culture. 

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership

  • Coach and mentor a team of lean black belts, enhancing their skills in process improvement methodologies, structured problem solving, and Kaizen Event facilitation.

  • Foster a culture of excellence, innovation, and collaboration across the BD Excellence & Business Transformation department and MMS broadly.

  • Drive accountability for effectively and efficiently delivering high-impact solutions that align with MMS’s strategic priorities.

Kaizen Event Leadership

  • Plan and execute Kaizen events for corporate processes, applying lean methodologies to knowledge based-work environments to eliminate waste and improve organizational effectiveness.

  • Work closely with sponsors (e.g., VPs, Senior Directors, Directors), Finance partners, and other collaboratorsto align project and Kaizen eventobjectives with MMS strategic objectives,deliver measurable improvement outcomes, and promote achievement of BD Excellence program goals.

  • Develop strategies to increase exposure and participation with Kaizen Events, including providing training andcoaching to business leaders and process owners to effectively collaborate in Kaizen events and workshops and lead these activities themselves.

Strategic Process Improvement

  • Identifyhigh-impact improvement opportunities, develop process improvement strategies, and drive problem solving processesto achieve improvements in revenue, gross profit, quality, and customer experience.

  • Own the kaizen funneland hold regular reviews withleadership teams, project sponsors,and partners to align prioritization decisions andcoordinate resourcing; ensure opportunities move from idea phase to execution rapidly, helping the business continuously push towards excellence.

  • Develop and implement strategies to embed sustainable lean process management capabilities.

  • Work cross-functionally within the BD Excellence & Business Transformation organization to ensure alignment andbest-in-class execution for critical initiatives requiring process improvement support.

Operational Excellence

  • Develop and maintainvisual management for demand, workflow, and performance tracking; establish accountability practices for monitoring and problem solving.

  • Establish operational metrics for process improvement initiatives and Kaizen events

  • Establishpractices for continuous learning and continuous improvement of team methods, tools, and techniques. 

  • Complete 30/60/90-day reviews to ensure process enhancements are valid and desires results are achieved.

  • Continuously scan the internal company (within BD) and outside the organization (across industry groups and benchmarks) to identify best-in-class and push the broader team to achieve excellence.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with senior executives and cross-functional leaders to secure alignment and support for key initiatives, inclusive of the Global MMS Leadership Team.

  • Create and deliver simple, audience-appropriate communications (e.g., emails, decks, live presentations) to share progress and results and engage partners appropriately.

  • Maintain visual artifacts to broadcast kaizen funnel backlog and events calendar; publish and distribute project close-outs and quarterly impact summaries to promote BD Excellence activities and related learning and process improvement outcomes to broad MMS audience.

Qualifications 

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, Engineering, or a related field.

  • MBA or relevant advanced degree preferred.

  • Additional certifications in Lean, Kaizen, Organizational Change, or other relevant methodologies are a plus.

Experience

  • 8+ years of relevant experience in Lean,Six Sigma and other process improvement methodologies, with at least 3 years at the Black Belt level or higher.

  • Master Black Belt certification required.

  • 5+ years of experience leading successful cross-functional improvement projects and events in corporate, non-manufacturing environments; lean-based business system contextis preferred.

  • 5+ years of experience training or coaching transactional process improvement.

  • 3+ years of experience managing high-visibility programs with executive-level (including C-Suite) stakeholders.

  • 3+ years of experience directly leading and coaching teams.

Skills

  • Expert knowledge of Lean and kaizen methodologies and their application to transactional processes.

  • Strong leadership capabilities with experience managing high-performing teams and a proven track record enabling scaled impact.

  • Strong customer focus with ability to think strategically and view the business from a general management and commercial leadership standpoint.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving capabilities.

  • Sophisticated interpersonal and English-language communication skills to influence senior leaders across a matrixed organization.

Location

  • This is an office-based hybrid role in San Diego, CA.

  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdayare required in-officedays each week.

  • Travel up to 50% for Kaizen events and relevant workshops, mainly domestic with minimal international travel.
