Job Description

Director of Manufacturing

Reporting to the Sr. Director of Manufacturing Molecular WHC and POC, the incumbent provides leadership to all manufacturing operations in Mebane, North Carolina to ensure attainment of key strategic initiatives in support of both short and long-term business goals. Leads and directs an integrated team that provides superior products and services to Waters customers around the world. Provides leadership in a customer-centric environment to drive continuous process and cost improvement, innovation, quality/regulatory compliance, and development of team members through engagement, coaching and empowerment. Incumbent represents the Integrated Supply Chain (e.g. Operations) function on business platform leadership teams by taking a global view of Operations-related support and requirements to meet the business needs. Develops and implements strategic manufacturing plans in support of the business unit/segment plan. Works on abstract issues and problems across all areas of the business, including cross-business unit relationships, as necessary. The incumbent will be required to make decisions and recommendations in the face of uncertain and dynamic business conditions, where errors in judgment may seriously impact customer or supplier relationships, result in substantial loss of scheduled production, deterioration of product/service quality, or seriously affect the financial position of the business unit.

Overview

The Plant Director of Mebane Manufacturing site leads and directs an integrated team that provides superior products to customers worldwide. Works closely with other Operational Leaders and shares responsibility to develop and execute key high-level business processes, including Order Fulfillment, Materials Management, Manufacturing, Quality, and Facilities Management. Provides leadership in a customer centric environment to drive continuous process and cost improvement, innovation, quality/regulatory compliance and development of team members through involvement, coaching and empowerment. Develops and implements strategic manufacturing plans in support of the unit/segment business plan. Works on abstract issues and problems across all areas of the worldwide business, including cross unit relationships as necessary. Works with all functions to plan and implement facility needs. The Director of Mebane Manufacturing site will be required to make decisions and recommendations in the face of uncertain and dynamic business conditions, where errors in judgment may seriously impact customer or supplier relationships, result in substantial loss of scheduled production, deterioration of product/service quality, or seriously affect the financial position of the Business Unit.

Main Responsibilities

The Plant Director of Mebane Manufacturing sites provides overall leadership to the plant operations to ensure attainment of key performance metrics encompassing Quality, Safety, Service and Financial performance areas. 

Incumbent will ensure proactive Associate Development is occurring throughout the plant.  This is managed through an effective HR Planning process and will include but not be limited to activities such as enriching developmental assignments within a site, appropriate cross site moves, temporary assignments, ongoing skill development through internal or, where appropriate, external training opportunities.

In conjunction with leader of Supply Chain, incumbent is responsible for ensuring that adequate capacity and assets are readily available to supply WW product demand.  This will entail effective and ongoing communication between Planning and the Manufacturing teams, active and effective

Strategy development is a key responsibility and incumbent will need to clearly understand the business direction, evaluate that in terms of existing manufacturing structure and capabilities, develop the appropriate manufacturing strategies to respond to the business needs and provide leadership and guidance to the plant to effectively execute the agreed upon strategies.

Incumbent will partner closely with Platform leaders to ensure alignment on product strategy roadmaps and management of customer expectations. Ensure manufacturing capabilities are aligned to ensure effective and successful product launches and product lifecycle management. 

In conjunction with Finance leaders, ensure the plant is aligned with business objectives and volume forecasts for the Annual Strategic Review (ASR) and the plant budget to include operating expenses, capital investment requirements and unit cost projections. Develop and manage budgeting and budget execution with a focus on product costs and margins.

Incumbent will be responsible for understanding and driving appropriate aspects of the Waters Manufacturing strategy across the plant. 

Continuous Improvement, which supports and enables the company strategy around Operating Effectiveness, is a core accountability of this position. 

Working with the site Quality leader, develop plans for annual areas of focus or improvement around Quality performance.  Jointly share the ownership of effectively executing these to deliver the improved outcomes in the areas that were targeted.

Working with Supply Chain, define annual improvement objectives on key Supply Chain metrics (Line fill, BO, Inventory Turns/$, Excess Obsolete as examples), then develop and effectively execute actions necessary to bring about the targeted metric improvements.

Qualifications

  • The successful candidate will have proven manufacturing leadership experience and the ability to deliver results in larger matrix organizations.
  • BS in Business, Science, or Engineering.  MBA preferable
  • 10+ years progressive experience in Manufacturing/ISC. Will have demonstrated ability to develop and successfully execute a strategy.  Breadth of background across numerous roles/functions within the Manufacturing/ISC area with demonstrated success in each area. 
  • Must have demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and the ability to succeed in a highly matrixed organization.  Ability to utilize SAP to access position appropriate information is required.  Previous multiple site responsibility highly desirable.
  • Individual must demonstrate very strong initiative and effectiveness with minimal supervision.  Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are crucial to success in this role.  Demonstrated ability to influence others is key.  Ability to lead/manage multiple initiatives simultaneously is vital to success in this role.
  • Incumbent is/will become proficient in Manufacturing Financial Budgeting/Reporting process, HRP Process, PMP Process and the S&OP Process.
  • Moderately high complexity driven by scope of responsibilities, impact of decisions on business and ultimately, company performance.
