Position Summary
Manage Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) programs and procedures.
Provide EHS support to BD Associates to maintain compliance with facility/corporate EHS policies, agency regulations, and best management practices.
Solve complex problems that affect environmental health and safety aspects of BDTI operations.
Perform tasks autonomously to ensure regulatory compliance.
Exercise sound and consistent judgment when developing procedures and practices.
Recognize hazards, understand the issues surrounding them, work with stakeholders to develop solutions, and manage the plans to completion.
Be a generalist and able to work with a wide variety of stakeholders, capable of providing leadership to meet environmental, health, safety, security and facility needs.
Responsibilities
Fill the roles of Chemical Hygiene Officer, Biosafety Officer, Radiation Safety Officer, Industrial Hygienist, Environmental Compliance Officer, Emergency Response Manager.
Conduct incident investigations for accidents and work-related injuries or illnesses. Coordinate tracking of cases by maintaining OSHA 300 Logs and corporate incident reporting system.
Manage BDTI’s Ergonomics Program.
Manage BDTI’s EHS Training Program. Work with the corporate central team to integrate required training into current systems.
Understand the various material, product, and waste streams of the facility to gather and report data to management and corporate groups.
Develop, review and update written safety and environmental programs, including SOPs and Work Instructions (WIs).
Maintain company’s chemical inventory and SDS files. Coordinate annual update of chemical inventory with departments.
Conduct regulatory evaluations, write reports as required, develop and implement corrective strategies.
Maintain applicable site permits parameters associated with EHS issues. Submit reports as necessary and ensure all work areas meet Local, State, and Federal regulatory requirements.
Manage site compliance calendar and all needed actions related.
Manage the Recycling, Bio-hazardous and Hazardous Waste vendor to ensure proper storage and labeling of all waste materials and the scheduling of waste disposal pick-ups. Conduct weekly inspections to ensure compliance.
Keeps abreast of any new requirements for compliance and implements those requirements.
Participate as required in training on regulatory issues affecting the EHS manager role.
Resolves most regulatory compliance questions/issues on their own, only bringing the occasional question/issue to site leaderships attention.
Implement scheduled departmental safety inspections and ensure corrective action for identified hazards. Ensures EHS policies and procedures are followed through education and training.
Discusses and documents pertinent to EHS topics at staff meetings. Participates as a standing member of all Safety Committees.
Performs other duties and assignments as required to support the BDTI mission. This role partners with the facilities and security group and will support that mission.
Partner with the BDTI Leadership Team to continue implementation of an EHS Management System.
Represent BDTI’s interest within the Corporate EHS Central Team.
Qualifications
Education
BS/BA in safety or a related discipline required
Certifications
Certified Safety Professional preferred
Certified Industrial Hygienist preferred
Experience
5 to 10 years related experience working in a laboratory, research, or manufacturing environment with Health Safety and/or environmental responsibilities required
Team leadership experience required
Problem-solving for safety and environmental concerns experience required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Familiar with state and federal OSHA, EPA, NRC, CDC, RCRA, Air and Water Quality regulations
Demonstrated ability to organize work and establish priorities
Effective customer service skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and time pressures
Effective interpersonal skills
Effective written and oral communication skills
Demonstrated ability to follow established policies and procedures
Effective analytical problem-solving skills
Must be proficient in working with PCs
Requires a good command of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, FileMaker Pro, e-mail, and the Internet
